A brief history of Brut
At over 45 years young, you could say that BRUT is one of Britain's most iconic brands. But to be honest, that sounds a bit fluffy. Let's just say it was, and still is, the fragrance of choice for real men.
In fact, BRUT is one of the best selling aftershaves in Britain.* In other words, blokes who buy BRUT splash it on liberally, as you've probably noticed if you've ever walked past one of them.
BRUT was first launched in 1964. However, in 1973 the more familiar BRUT 33 was launched as everyday cologne. It was launched at a budget price in plastic rather than glass bottles. It was called 33 because it was only 33% the strength of the original, thankfully.
BRUT really came to prominence in the 1970s as a result of the famous ad campaign starring Henry ("Splash it all over") Cooper and other famous sports stars of the time including Barry Sheene of motorcycle racing fame, David Hemery the athlete and Kevin (the hair-do) Keegan who happened to be pretty nifty with a football.
BRUT was also advertised by another pretty famous footballer by the name of Gazza. Who could forget how he won the hearts of the nation with those famous tears in the Italia '90 World Cup? It was alleged at the time that those same tears had been brought on by the great smell of BRUT, but to this day the claim is still unfounded (we're joking).
Henry's still a big fan of the brand so we held a 75th birthday event for him last year with all his old mates - watch our home video of the day.
It's hard to believe that BRUT is over 45 years old and still flying off the shelves. In fact, sales have almost tripled in the last 5 years - we're sold in shops like Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Superdrug and Boots plus some others. We've brought the range bang up to date with Eau de Toilette, shower gels, deo and a load of different smells for your pits like Alaska, Musk & Instinct as well as new gift packs for men.
